What makes the one to shake you down?
Each touch belongs to each new sound.
Say now you’ll want to shake me too.
This chorus stirs my soul.
What makes the one to shake you down?
Each touch belongs to each new sound.
Say now you’ll want to shake me too.
This chorus stirs my soul.

Evening: Landscape with an Aqueduct, 1818
Théodore Gericault
Oil on canvas
I saw this at the Met over the weekend, and it caught my eye through a series of hallways on the second floor, 19th Century/Contemporary European Paintings. The dark theme and landscape immediately reminded me of van Ruisdael’s Jewish Cemetery, but the technique still clearly reflects Gericault’s Romantic style. The backdrop fuses the Italian countryside with ruins, two of my favorite memories of Italy. The most alluring characteristic of this work is the evening sunset in the corner illuminating the landscape, in stark contrast to the storm overhead.
One word: sublime.
